Stem cells in the treatment of diabetes caused by surgical treatment of pancreatic cancer

Abstract

Surgical treatment of pancreatic cancer often leads to the development of diabetes mellitus (DM) due to the loss of a significant mass of functioning pancreatic tissue. Currently, the possibility of using stem cells (SC) to restore the islet apparatus of the pancreas and treat diabetes resulting from surgery for pancreatic cancer is being studied. The review examines various sources of SC, methods of their isolation and differentiation into insulin-producing cells. Special attention is paid to the advantages and disadvantages of SC allo- and xenotransplantation, as well as the prospects for stimulating endogenous proliferation of pancreatic beta cells. The potential of SC therapy in improving glycemic control and reducing the need for insulin therapy in patients with diabetes after pancreatic resection is emphasized, however, further research is needed to optimize SC therapy methods and evaluate its long-term efficacy and safety in this group of patients.
