Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the most common subtype, however, more and more attention is being paid to other subtypes, namely secondary diabetes associated with disorders of the exocrine function of the pancreas. The literature review includes an analysis of scientific papers from the databases PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, eLibrary, CyberLeninka and Google Scholar. Diabetes and impaired glucose metabolism are common and increasingly diagnosed complications after acute pancreatitis. Such patients usually require insulin earlier than patients with T2DM, and they often experience difficult-to-control episodes of hypo- and hyperglycemia. According to several large studies, the prevalence of the disease is about 15% within 1 year and even more within 5 years. There is evidence that diabetes leads to structural changes in the pancreas that can potentially contribute to the development of acute pancreatitis, which once again highlights the complex relationship between acute pancreatitis and the endocrine part of the pancreas.
