Regenerative properties of platelet-rich fibrin: application in oral lesions

Abstract

Aim. Oral mucosal lesions (OMLs) are a common pathology that significantly reduces quality of life. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a promising autologous biomaterial; however, its effectiveness in OM pathology requires systematic evaluation. The aim of this review is to summarize data on the efficacy of PRF for various OM lesions.
Materials and methods. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases was conducted until April 2024. Twelve studies were selected based on the inclusion criteria: 3 RCTs, 3 split-mouth studies, 2 prospective studies, 3 case reports, and 1 retrospective study.
Results. PRF was used in the form of membranes and injectables. Statistically significant acceleration of healing, reduction in lesion area, symptom regression, and a reduced recurrence rate were demonstrated compared to control groups. Histological analysis confirmed the regenerative and anti-inflammatory potential of PRF.
Conclusion. PRF-based therapy is a promising and safe treatment for oral mucosal lesions. Large-scale RCTs aimed at standardizing protocols and assessing long-term efficacy are needed for its practical implementation.
