Infective endocarditis of a native aortic valve of staphylococcal etiology in adolescents: a clinical case

Abstract

Infective endocarditis (IE) in children is a rare but severe, potentially disabling and fatal disease. Diagnosis and treatment of patients with IE requires vigilance and the engagement of doctors of different specialties. The most difficult cases of IE to diagnose in children are in the absence of previously known changes in the heart valves, especially in cases of staphylococcal etiology and an acute course of the disease. This paper presents a clinical case of acute IE of a native aortic valve in a teenager, which clinically debuted as purulent meningitis associated with staphylococcal infection (Staphylococcus aureus). The aggressive infectious and destructive process in the heart resulted in the development of a fibrous ring abscess and subtotal destruction of the aortic valve. The combination of surgical treatment and targeted antibacterial therapy let to favourable outcome.
